![]() ![]() There were obvious privacy issues with Lance pretending to just be a dog in order to get into Tim’s home and then to spend time with him, but the wrongness of it was acknowledged in the story. Tim being all awkward and speaking too much. Lance being all intimidating and barely speaking. ![]() They were both so socially awkward at first, it was so funny seeing them try to talk. Their feelings, and their eventual relationship, were sweet and adorable. Tim was lonely and had some difficulties in his past and just wanted to grow his roses and veggies in peace. Lance was protective of his pack and just wanted to keep them safe. They were lovably awkward and trying their best. ![]() The characters and their romance were both so cute. And as it went on, I got more and more invested. This was a little silly at first, but in a way that was fun and made me laugh and smile. I don’t even know how to organize my thoughts properly I’m just so full of warm, squishy feelings. ![]() I loved it! It’s weird how sometimes it’s the books I’m so sure won’t really be to my taste that end up being some of the best. This was so damn cute, just the right amount of ridiculous to be fun, and exactly what I needed to make me smile. ![]() ![]() As always, it was a pleasure reading with these lovely ladies!Ī big thank you to Edelweiss, Berkley Books and Jennifer Ashley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review!!Įxpected Date of Publication: January 2, 2018. We each felt similarly on this one, with one of us not even being able to finish. This was a Traveling Sister Read with Brenda, Diane and Holly. The author, Jennifer Ashley, did a fantastic job creating the Victorian atmosphere and characters. I really liked the cook’s character and enjoyed her dealings with the house staff and family, but I lost interest in the crime solving side of the book which was the main storyline. How could a head cook of such a household have time to run around town on a daily basis investigating a crime? It just didn’t make sense to me. The novel revolves around a cook of a high power household investigating a murder. Unfortunately, my connection was short lived, as the plausibility of the story became highly unrealistic once the crime was committed (about 1/3 of the way in). It had such a “Downton Abbey” feel to it that I couldn’t help but love it. I immediately loved the characters and found myself captivated by the Victorian mansion household and how it was run. ![]() I had an instant connection to this novel. ![]() This book started off much stronger than it finished. ![]() ![]() ![]() new voice, new tone - who's this then? turns out, this chapter is told from the POV of a girl in the class, mizuki - the class president, who witnesses and reports on the aftermath of the teacher's revenge-plot-admission and the way it affects the two accused boys and how the revelation that they are murderers causes the other children to treat them. The second chapter threw me for a loop at first. ![]() her detached offhandedness makes this final lecture incredibly shocking, and when the teasingly meandering narrative starts to firm up and show its true shape, it's just like BOOM but slowly, subtly, her lecture becomes a tightening noose as these seemingly unconnected stories take on a chilling import as she ultimately accuses two students in the classroom shūya and naoki, of causing manami's death, and then very casually drops the bombshell of the horrifying revenge she has already set in motion. The first chapter is told in the form of a lecture as a teacher addresses her class with what appears to be a series of anecdotal non sequiturs about the new milk program at school, the announcement of her impending retirement, the illness of a "famous" teacher at another school, the recent death of her four-year-old daughter manami, etc etc. ![]() This book is delivered in a stark and barebones prose, but the story itself is surprisingly convoluted and intricate. ![]() ![]() ![]() The main character is Mackenzie Allen Phillips, a father of five called "Mack" by his family and friends. The novel is set in the American Northwest. He also told radio host talk show Drew Marshall that The Shack "is a metaphor for the places you get stuck, you get hurt, you get damaged. ![]() The title of the book is a metaphor for "the house you build out of your own pain", as Young explained in a telephone interview. ![]() In 2009 it was awarded the "Diamond Award" for sales of over 10 million copies by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. 1 paperback trade fiction seller on The New York Times Best Seller list from June 2008 to early 2010, in a publishing partnership with Hachette Book Group USA's FaithWords imprint (Hodder & Stoughton in the UK).
